Strength of Materials Lab (SM Lab)

Demonstrating the basic principles in the area of strength and mechanics of materials and structural analysis to the undergraduate students through a series of experiments is the objective of the strength of materials lab.  Measuring the properties of the materials such as impact strength, tensile strength, compressive strength, hardness, ductility are conducted in the lab.

Major Equipments Strength of Materials Lab:- Universal testing machine, Torsion testing machine, Impact testing machine, Brinell hardness testing machine, Rockwell hardness testing machine, etc.

    1. UNIVERSAL TESTING MACHINE (100KN)

Commonly known as UTM is the one used for conducting many experiments. Usually 40 KN capacity machine is used in majority of the labs.
We are proud to have a 100 KN capacity machine that serves the purpose of experiments under both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Faculties and students utilize this facility for their research work and competitions at national level. Various types of experiments include:

      • Tension test
      • Flexure test
      • Shear test etc.

    1. TORSION TESTING MACHINE

Here, determination of Modulus of Rigidity is performed here. Conventional Torsion testing machine has physical application of twist at one end and taking torque readings. Latest machine in our lab incorporates electrically driven motor and precise torque reading. Simultaneously graph is also generated.

HARDNESS TESTING MACHINE
Hardness testing machines provide the simplest and most economical testing methods among the many types of material testing equipment and they play a key role in research through production and commercial transaction. Hardness tests are used for many engineering applications to achieve the basic requirement of mechanical properties which is related to:

      • Wear resistance of a material
      • Its ability to abrade or indent another material or
      • Its resistance to permanent or plastic deformation

Types of hardness tests

      1. BRINELL
      2. ROCKWELL
      3. VICKERS

    1. IMPACT TESTING MACHINE

This is designed to measure the resistance to failure of a material to a suddenly applied force. The test measures the impact energy, or the energy absorbed prior to fracture. The most common methods of measuring impact

      • Izod Test
      • Charpy Test

    1. DEFLECTION TESTING APPARATUS

Deflection is the degree to which a structural element is displaced under a load. It may refer to an angle or a distance. The deflection must be considered for the purpose of the structure.

    1. SPRING TESTING MACHINE

Spring testing machines are used for testing both compression and tension springs in a single machine. Open and closed coil are done in the same spring testing machine.

    1. TORSION PENDULUM

A torsional pendulum consists of a disk-like mass suspended from a thin wire. When the mass is twisted about the axis of the wire, the wire exerts a torque on the mass, tending to rotate it back to its original position. If twisted and released, the mass will oscillate back and forth, executing simple harmonic motion.

    1. FATIGUE TESTING MACHINE

Fatigue occurs when a material is subjected to repeated loading and unloading. If the loads are above a certain limit, cracks will begin to form at the stress concentrated areas such as the surface. Eventually a crack will reach a critical size, the crack will propagate suddenly, and the structure will fracture.
In our lab fatigue testing machine is mainly used for aircraft structures lab under aeronautical department and for experimental stress analysis.
